Well Water Treatment & Filtration System Cost (2026)
$1,200–$3,600
Typical national range · reviewed 2026-10
There is no single 'well water treatment system.' There is a sequence of parts chosen from your test results: a sediment filter to catch grit, an iron or sulfur filter if the water stains or smells, a softener if it's hard, UV if bacteria have shown up, and reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap for nitrate, arsenic or dissolved solids.

Orange stains, black specks and a rotten-egg smell are the three complaints behind most iron-filter quotes. EPA's secondary (aesthetic) standards are 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese; above those, expect orange and black staining on fixtures and laundry. These limits are non-enforceable and cosmetic, but they're what installers size equipment against.
